Would you be wearing what you are right now if it wasn't for social media?
This series is a collection of diptych portraits that mimic the style of editorials to comment on the current state of fashion and explore how social media influences individuals’ fashion choices.
This project was inspired by a post I saw on Instagram that asked the question, “Would you be wearing what you are right now if it wasn’t for social media?” This question made me wonder about the degree to which my friends are influenced by social media’s fashion standards, so I wanted to create this series as a case study to explore this concept further. Imposed on the images are their handwritten responses to this question.
On social media, people present themselves in a way that doesn’t always reflect the truth. To counter this, I wanted to capture as much authenticity as possible. I wanted to focus on the ephemeral moments of authenticity that are not usually posted online to show that these raw sides of people can be beautiful, too.
